Their Work

Carol Buckley founded Elephant Aid International in 2011. With more than 30 years of experience working with elephants in captivity, having coordinated the rescue of the first elephant confiscated by the USDA and working with countless zoos on the proper management of elephants, Buckley has dedicated her life to the welfare of these beautiful creatures.

Elephant Aid International provides proper foot care, veterinary services, improves stable sanitation and chain-free enclosures. Additionally they work with local governments, NGOs and mahouts (elephant trainers) to create permanent facilities and training on the proper care of elephants. Not only do these programs provide a better quality of life for the elephants but it also helps improve the economy and tribal life of the cultures they are tightly connected with.

SPCA International is thrilled to support Elephant Aid International and their many ongoing programs, especially the provision of a chain-free enclosure for a bull elephant living in Nepal. Living in a chained enclosure means diseased and painful feet for elephants; Elephant Aid International provides solar powered enclosures to allow resident elephants the ability to roam bathe and play. Thanks to Elephant Aid International many elephants in Asia no longer have joint pain and better lives for them and their mahouts.
