Their Work
Founded in the mid 1980’s, Lamar County Humane Shelter is an organization run strictly by volunteers with the assistance of veterinarians in neighboring counties and through monetary donations from its members. In fact in the recent years, the backbone of the group is a dedicated handful of senior volunteers who have residing in the county for some time. Unfortunately, the county faces a very large unemployment rate and the sources for funding their spay/neuter programs, veterinary bills and food bills as well as educational facilitation to the public, has practically dried up.
They work with profound determination to stay afloat by relying on membership ($15 annual fee) from the greater population, community, and government as an outcry to support their efforts.
State law mandates that if a county doesn’t have a large city in it, the commissioners are to provide assistance for an animal shelter. Because no monies have been allocated for a full facility thus far, the volunteers care for the injured and stray animals in their own homes. Sadly, due to the low-income situation in the county, and the lack of education, adoption rates are very low and cruelty, negligence and apathy are still very high.
Lamar County Humane Society needs all the help they can get by way of monetary relief for vet bills, sterilization, education and would also greatly appreciate pet food contribution for small and large animals.
