Their Work

Animal Balance formed in 2004 to address the escalating cat and dog populations on the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. Working directly with the community, they created a ‘community-based sterilization program’ and by 2008, they had sterilized 80% of the dogs on the four human-inhabited islands.

After the success of the Galapagos program, Animal Balance began deploying veterinary teams to islands all over the world. Using Mobile Animal Sterilization Hospitals (MASH), they have helped stop the use of lethal methods to control animal populations by training local veterinarians in the fast and safe spay/neuter technique. This enables each island to create a sustainable and humane animal management program.

In 2019, the team started Animal Balance USA, through which they target the highest kill shelters in the US and send in veterinary teams to sterilize animals so they may be adopted rather than euthanized.

SPCA International is proud to support this incredible organization and to help them continue their work on the Galapagos Islands, providing a sustainable, humane animal management program.
