Their Work
The Animal House Jamaica aids Jamaica’s neglected, abused, stray, abandoned, unwanted, and injured animals. Founded in the 1990’s as the first companion animal welfare organization on the north coast of Jamaica, it is the first no-kill shelter on the island and the only to provide TNR (Trap, Neuter and Release) with feral cats. The non-profit organization works mainly with dogs and cats and occasionally horses and other species in emergency situations. Once an animal is rescued and in their hands, they provide sanctuary, medical treatment and rehabilitation, including spay/neuter.
The dedicated team then works relentlessly to find each animal a permanent, safe and loving home. Several hundred of the rescues have even found homes abroad with visitors to Jamaica, who fell in love with the stray, injured or abandoned animals. The few that are unable to be adopted out are provided care and sanctuary for the duration of their natural lives. The Animal House Jamaica also does a significant amount of spay and neuter for low-income families’ pets, as well as hands-on community education about animal welfare, including the importance of proper care and containment, and the critical need for spay/neuter to curb overpopulation and prevent unwanted litters.
Being a former Shelter Grant recipient, SPCA International has been following their great work since early 2010. Recently, they wrote to us with urgent requests in order to keep providing the outstanding care they offer to the abundance of animals in need living on the island. Not having enough room for all the strays, and enough funding to supply sterilization, medical needs and even food, they came to us for help once again. Immediately, we took action and offered them an Emergency Shelter Grant thanks to the generosity of our supporters.
