Their Work

The Bonaire Donkey Sanctuary is the forever home of over 700 donkeys rescued from the streets. The sanctuary was established in 1993, when Marina Melis and her husband set up a sanctuary for sick, injured and orphaned donkeys.

Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire is committed to providing shelter and care for all donkeys on the island of Bonaire. They also run education workshops -in collaboration with Stinapa Bonaire National Parks Foundation – to provide information about the living environment of donkeys at local schools and to tourists. Unfortunately, donkeys are often involved in car accidents, abused or neglected. The team at the Bonaire sanctuary is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to help rescue donkeys. Once the animals have recovered, they are lovingly cared for at the sanctuary for the rest of their lives.

SPCA International is proud to support Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire in their mission.
