Their Work
Friends of Animals Utah (FOAU) aims to eliminate the euthanasia of healthy and adoptable animals in the surrounding counties via a multifaceted approach to animal advocacy. The group re-homed over 800 dogs and cats last year through their “Furburbia” adoption center located at a local shopping mall. They also provide low- and no-cost spay and neuter services for pet animals as well as TNR for feral cats. Their educational outreach – including classroom presentations, assemblies, and a student ambassador program – encourage the development of personal values regarding the treatment and welfare of animals.
More unusually, FOAU also works with a local women’s shelter to foster and care for the pets that women might otherwise be forced to leave behind when fleeing domestic violence. Furthermore, FOAU is active in developing human/animal therapeutic interventions. Interaction with animals has been shown to benefit, among others, children with a history of abuse or obesity, victims of domestic violence, and returning veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
FOAU has just finished constructing a large rescue and rehabilitation facility that will aid the group in expanding its goals in adoption, spay/neuter, education, and therapy. SPCA International is pleased that our Shelter of the Week grant will help ready this new facility for service, specifically by helping to outfit the kennels with plastic and stainless steel barriers to improve the safety and security of the dogs inside.
