Their Work
Lucie Cerny founded the Rescue and Sanctuary for Threatened Animals (RASTA) in 2001. Formerly located just south of Calgary, Alberta in Canada, Lucie has recently taken on the monumental task of relocating the RASTA Sanctuary and all the animals to Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada for a better quality of life for the animals as well as to fill a need for farm animal refuge in an area that currently lacks this. RASTA provides a no-kill and cage-free permanent home to some cats and dogs but their main focus is farm animal rescue and advocacy.
In 2013 RASTA founded the Potbelly Pig & Farm Animal Rehoming Network and in 2014 the Farm Animal Rescue & Rehoming Movement (FARRM) was also born from RASTA’s inspiration. Both organizations continue to operate in Alberta today, along with a few other farm animal sanctuaries that have since come into existence.
Inspired by her dog, the late Rasta, Lucie addressed a need in the animal welfare community by providing advocacy and shelter to abused and neglected farm animals. Offering an interactive experience to the public at the sanctuary, Lucie and the RASTA volunteers aim to educate and promote compassion for all creatures great and small with no distinction between breeds or species.
SPCA International is proud to support RASTA though the Shelter Support Fund Program in order to aid with the construction of a proper drainage system and new barn.
