The Kauai Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Kauai SPCA) is a no-kill, foster-based animal rescue organization founded in 2017 by a compassionate group of Kauai business leaders, veterinarians, and animal welfare advocates. They provide a safety net for Kauai’s homeless pets that cannot be saved by existing rescues or shelters.

As part of their Second Chance Program, Kauai SPCA collaborates with the Kauai Humane Society (KHS) – the only open-admission shelter on the island – to alleviate the strain on the organization. Kauai SPCA takes in animals from KHS that have severe medical or behavioral needs for rehabilitation and, eventually, adoption. Kauai SPCA also works with rescues and shelters in California, Oregon, and Washington to relocate adoptable animals to the mainland so that they may find loving homes and help alleviate the pet overpopulation issue on Kaua’i.

SPCA International is proud to support this organization as they continue to nurture adoptable animals and engage the Kauai community to save homeless and injured animals.

Their Work

The Milo Foundation was named after founder Lynne Tingle’s beloved deaf and blind Australian Shepherd. Lynne’s experience with Milo led her to learn about other animals who deserved a chance at a good life – the abandoned and stray dogs and cats who fill city shelters – which led to the founding of the foundation in 1994.

The Milo Foundation is a no-kill organization committed to reducing the burden on kill shelters throughout our region and beyond. They accomplish this by accepting at-risk animals from overburdened shelters, rehabilitating those dogs and cats, and offering sanctuary to those that are not adoptable. They also educate the public about responsible pet guardianship, including spay/neuter. Since launching in 1994, they have saved the lives of over 36,000 animals.

The Milo Foundation is also committed to community education. They run a school engagement program and offer internships to youth who are interested in animal welfare through Contra Costa County. Additionally, they work with Richmond YouthWorks, providing a summer employment program to at-risk and in-risk youth.

SPCA International is proud to support The Milo Foundation as they continue to make great strides for abandoned and stray animals in western California and beyond.

Compassionate Paws International’s mission is to alleviate the suffering of street animals in resource-limited settings in partnership with local organizations. This nonprofit acts as a funding bridge to “invisible” local animal welfare organizations around the world.

The team at Compassionate Paws International (CPI) currently supports and funds animal welfare work/projects in areas of Cuba, India, Malaysia, and Sierra Leone. There are countless organizations and community groups who work tirelessly to do extraordinarily impactful work for suffering street animals but often do not have the resources to support them. These locally-rooted groups and individuals are the ones CPI hopes to support and strengthen, as they continue to work off their sheer love of and compassion for animals. Through their partnerships, CPI provides care and veterinary treatment to abandoned or mistreated animals and reduces the number of homeless or neglected animals through sterilization.
