Angela Cherry, after witnessing first hand the need to control the overpopulation of stray animals around the globe, founded Helping Paws Across Borders (HPAB) in 2003.  Although the non-profit group is based out of New Mexico, their reach extends far into South America and beyond.

HPAB is comprised of veterinarians and vet techs that volunteer their time year after year to provide quality medical care to poverty stricken areas for no cost. HPAB provides routine care but also major surgeries, treatment and Animal Humane Education to help improve the quality of life of animals and people.  From sea turtles to house cats, HPAB has provided medical care to 2,000+ animals and these numbers only continue to grow.

SPCA International is excited to support Helping Paws Across Borders this February with their clinics in Roatan, Honduras. These clinics will provide spay and neuter services, vaccines and education for the locals.

Their Work

Established in 2011 for the strict love and protection of animals, SPCA Straż Zwierzat Polska
or SPCA Poland Animal Guard in English, is the product of many activists from various organizations who formed a coalition because they simply couldn’t “go indifferent to the suffering of animals” anymore.

As a fledging young organization determined to make strides in the fight against animal cruelty in Poland, where there are few laws protecting animals, they are actively searching for support and acceptance from the public and local authorities.  Because the volunteers believe that animals are vulnerable, they suffer in silence, so becoming their voice is of greatest priority. Through education in schools and to the general publicspay and neuter clinics, rescue and rehabilitation of stray and abandoned animals, SPCA Straż Zwierzat Polska  hopes to diminish the number of acts of cruelty and neglect towards animals in Poland.

We were first contacted through our Shelter Program and have since formed a wonderful relationship with the young non-profit organization. We are honored to support their hard work and efforts and hope to continue to be a valuable source of information through their progress.

Their Work

Established in 2005, Gentle Giants Draft Horse Rescue was formed to facilitate the rescue of Draft and Draft Cross horses from slaughter, abuse, and neglect.

Slaughter is a highly profitable market and most of the public is unaware that buyers for the slaughterhouses frequent public auctions to purchase their horses. Gentle Giants makes it their goal to attend the same public auctions in order to outbid the meat buyer in order to provide these beautiful and often overworked animals with loving homes and the treatment and veterinary care they so deserve.

The organization is also devoted to raising public awareness through the use of brochures, pamphlets, and public presentations on the topics of horse slaughter and cruelty, the responsibilities of horse ownership, the over-population and over-breeding of horses, and how over-breeding contributes to the horse slaughter industry.  Gentle Giants houses over sixty head of draft horses, and has placed over 550 draft-breed horses into adoptive homes since they began.

A Shelter Support Grant from SPCAI will enable them to purchase some much needed equipment, such as, a horse sized sling and an ambulatory lift that would allow them to lift downed horses into a standing position for rescue, transport, and treatment.  These supplies would give them the ability to treat horses of all breeds, not just draft horses, and would also give Gentle Giants the opportunity to collaborate with other local humane agencies and equine veterinarians.

Their Work

Greece has been a country in financial crisis for sometime now. Many people are struggling to keep afloat and unfortunately the first to pay the price is the family pet. Even though Greece has always had a large stray animal population, since the economic downfall, this number has exploded and with it comes an overwhelming number of injuries and incidences of cruelty because these dogs and cats that were once domesticated are now forced to live on the streets to fend for themselves.

Noah's Little Ark in Chania, Crete, a small animal welfare and rescue group established in 1993 was founded by Silke Wrobela, a local citizen who could not longer turn her back on the homeless animals and decided to dedicate her life to looking after the stray and injured domesticated and wild animals of Chania, Crete.

Noah’s Little Ark, although recognized by the local government for its services, does not receive any funding for what they do. The costs for caring, feeding and vetting the overwhelming amount of strays that cross their paths are exorbitant. Although the police and fire departments, coast guard and municipality contact them for aid whenever they are faced with an injured or sick animal, the funding is non-existent.

As you can imagine, their expenses have skyrocketed and because the crisis is not  only limited to Greece, their donations have decreased as well. At the moment they have approximately 500 mouths to feed in their shelters and are finding it terribly difficult to keep up with expenses. They are working at a bare minimum with no heat, no electricity but their animals are fed and medically attended to as best they can. However, they fear that this will not be the case soon for the number of animals under their care is multiplying daily.  Sadly, the Greek government has stopped them from rehoming the dogs and cats to other parts of the world, so their only option is to desperately search for funding before they have to consider the unimaginable, turning the animals away.

A Shelter Support Grant from SPCA International will enable them to stay afloat for just a short while. Please consider sharing this page so they could get even greater help from animal lovers like you around the globe.
