Robyn Gojkovich, a certified law enforcement officer with the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department, has been a criminal investigator for over 10 years. In 2005, she began investigating animal crimes in the Doña Ana County expanding to the parameters of New Mexico.

Originally, all the dogs that were seized went to a local animal shelter because it was the only option at the time. However, while the criminal cases were being filed, some of the dogs began to disappear. Some were unfortunately accidentally euthanized due to over crowding, others were housed together, creating an environment where they would fight and kill each other. Some would get sick and die on their own. Because these dogs were still considered evidence, it was extremely detrimental to the cases and more secure measures were in need.

Officer Gojkovich sought assistance to build a new structure from both the City and the County but regrettably got turned down, so she approached the Sherriff who offered a couple of acres of land that belonged to the department and began building a temporary shelter with the help of supplies donated by a local animal shelter.

Despite the limited resources, animal cruelty complaints such as hoarding, neglect and abuse continued to pour in to the sheriff’s office, which made Robyn’s job quite difficult as she continuously struggled to find suitable shelter for the victims.

In 2010, after many hopeful promises and a shoestring budget, the County built the shell of a shelter.  Today it sits unfinished due to lack of funding, and the animals are still kept at the outdoor facility that was only meant to be a temporary solution.

In the summer, it is so hot they have to continually water the ground so the dogs won’t burn their feet; in the winter, it’s not any better, they stuff the dog houses with straw to keep them warm. When it rains, they have to make sure the dogs are off the ground so they don’t drown. And sadly, they often have to beg for money just to feed the animals.

Because justice isn’t always swift, and the court system can get bogged down, a lot of these animals at the shelter stay longer than expected. They didn’t choose this lifestyle; a criminal did. It is up to us to give them a better, more comfortable place to call home while they a wait the next phase of their life.

One thing many visitors notice when arriving in Chile is the large
quantity of stray dogs especially in Punta Arenas, a beautiful coastal
city in Patagonia. To many, it appears chaotic to have all these
animals wandering around. Though mostly tame, they do cause problems.
Numerous issues such as; car accidents, dog bites, strewn garbage,
transmittable parasites/diseases, attacks on wildlife and livestock
and the several tons of animal waste deposited throughout the city
daily. Many of these animals had owners but are often dumped and
left to their own devices. People tire of the grown puppy, pregnant
female, messy Cocker, dangerous Rottweiler or have to move to a
different region. The solution often is to dump on a street far from
home or out in the country. Though many strays in the city center
appear accustomed and healthy, maybe a little shaggy, numerous cases
exist of horrible injuries, poisoning, neglect, sickness and
starvation. The Chilean federal and local governments do not regularly
 provide animal control services.

Filling in this gap is CODDA (Corporación de Defensa de los Derechos
de los Animales, a federally recognized Chilean non-profit, operating
a shelter since 1991 and working with local government on enforcement,
education and sterilization. The Founder Senora Helia Tagle and a small group started
the organization in 1990 to stop the street poisoning of dogs to
combat the over population. Currently CODDA is the only animal shelter
in Chilean Patagonia. Although they are a relatively small organization with a low
budget and just a handful of supporters and volunteers, they
are making strides. They currently house up to 160 dogs and cats, stress
adoptions, sponsor small scale spay/neuter, pick up abandoned or
injured animals and run public education campaigns. The cooperation of
several veterinarians (private and public)provides low cost medical
services, discounted spay/neuter and dignified euthanasia and the local
university veterinary program utilizes the shelter as a weekly working
classroom.  Education and changing the culture of “irresponsibility” is a big
focus for this organization as is getting to the root of the problems.

Because of their hard work, CODDA has managed to stop the poising of street dogs in Punta Arenas, they have assisted over 3000 dogs and cats since 1991 and they created and implemented the first ever long-term spay and neuter program in the area.
Slowly, they are changing the culture of neglect but they need our help to continue this remarkable mission. Funds are depleting, and support is at a bare minimum.

Their Work

Manhattan Valley Cat Rescue is a group of neighborhood volunteers united to help ease the plight of abandoned cats and kittens living on the streets of the neighborhood, known as Manhattan Valley (100 Street to 110 Street, between Amsterdam Avenue and Central Park West) in the borough of Manhattan.

The life expectancy of a street cat is approximately 3 years compared to the 15 years an indoor cat might live. Most outdoor cats will die a painful and sad death from disease, climate, abuse and/or starvation.  The all-volunteer group of Manhattan Valley residents has watched the problem of abandoned cats grow worse and worse over the years and have come together to do something about it. Thanks to the generosity of Rev. Laura Jervis of Westside Federation for Senior Housing, they have been able to build a temporary shelter and rely completely on donations to get the felines vetted, fed and sterilized. In over 10 years since they started their coalition, they have been able to save more than 400 cats from the streets of Manhattan.

Beyond rescue work, they hope to start an educational campaign to impress on local businesses and residents on the importance of spaying and neutering.
Together, their tireless efforts will hopefully one day end a condition that has persisted for much too long.

Throughout history a horse’s worth has been measured by what he could do for man. Horses have provided transport, done hard labor, carried soldiers into battle, performed as athletes and entertainers and have provided pleasure to millions. But if watch horses simply be horses, we can truly appreciate their intrinsic value. They are brave, strong, loyal and incredibly intelligent animals that respond to curiosity and playfulness in a remarkable way.

Refuge RR for Horses, located in Ontario, Canada, feels that mankind should be indebted to these magnificent beings, so they work hard at trying to give back that which should never have been taken away, their freedom, and providing them with the protection that is owed to them.

Refuge RR for Horses is a registered, charitable organization, which rescues, rehabilitates and provides permanent homes for abused, neglected and/or abandoned horses. Moreover, they also provide peaceful retirement for horses that are no longer serviceable. Along with their equine residents they provide sanctuary to a variety of other animals: sheep, goats, pigs, chickens, ducks, rabbits, dogs and cats as well.

Currently, there are over 400 animals and birds at the sanctuary that require daily care, including vetting, feeding, socialization and networking for good forever homes. In addition to the regular cost of caring for such a number of animals with no public funding, the refuge has run into a severe water shortage (their well has run dry) and requires significant funds in order to bring in fresh water for the animals. Help to raise money for a new well for their all-volunteer organization is crucial to its survival. Their only source right now is transporting water from a nearby neighbor . Please think about sharing their story and supporting the Shelter Programs at SPCAI so that we can continue to help organizations and the animals they care for.

Their Work

Due to a busy kitten season, The Newnan-Coweta Humane Society has been incurring a large influx of cats and kittens. Unfortunately, because of lack of space, time is running out for many of these wonderful pets and after seeing their plea for supplies on a national animal newsletter, SPCAI’s Shelter Grant Program responded. There are many Coweta families in desperate need of pet food and cat litter. Donations and cat food, kitten food, dog food, puppy food, cat litter, towels and blankets are being accepted through the donation based shelter.

SPCA International responded by quickly distributing a $1,000 grant.  We encourage you to do whatever you can to help this great shelter and the animals in their community by sending cash donations or any of the supplies listed above directly to them.  You can find their website linked below.

The all volunteer organization works directly with Animal Control by hosting weekly adoption clinics, providing spay and neuter clinics, creating an education outreach in the public schools (Pet Lover's Clubs), a senior citizen visitation program (Furry Friends), and an active Trap and Release program. In 2003, they became the leaders in establishing humane euthanasia by injection, versus the old "gas chamber" that had previously been used.

“A dog is truly the best friend you will ever have. A dog’s love is unconditional, his forgiveness boundless and his trust and belief in his people unmatched. It is truly humbling to walk in the company of such angels.”

NY Abandoned Angels Cocker Spaniel Rescue, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue and re-homing of cocker spaniels and other dogs in need of loving forever homes. They will not reject any dog due to age or health and even accept many dogs that have some temperament and/or medical issues as well as victims from puppy mills. Because of their limited resources, they give priority to cocker spaniels and other dogs in local high kill shelters that are in danger of being destroyed.

Founded in 2007 in memory of a special Cocker Spaniel named “Rudy”, Abandoned Angels is a volunteer driven group of concerned individuals relying solely on donations, whether through adoption or simple generosity from the public.

“People come by the pet store while we are showing our adoptable cats and kittens.  I often hear them say, “Oh, the poor things”.  I correct them and say, “These are the lucky ones.  The poor things are still out there.  These cats have been saved.  These cats will get a home”.  Maybe not today.  But they will get a home.”

Debi Romano, President

SaveKitty Foundation is no-kill, all-volunteer Queens-based rescue group that helps New York City’s homeless and abandoned animals.  SaveKitty volunteers rescue animals from the streets, basements, alleyways and abandoned buildings in Queens and other NYC neighborhoods as well as from desperate situations where their lives may be in danger.
Because they are not a shelter, the cats that are available for adoption are cared for in the volunteers’ homes once they are vetted and sterilized.

Save Kitty Foundation has a remarkable Trap and Release (TNR) program where they have been able to spay and neuterthousands of feral cats; thereby, significantly reducing the number of stray and feral felines in New York City.

Relying on the generosity of concerned citizens, donations have allowed them to spay and neuter between 500 and 800 cats annually as well as rescue and place hundreds in loving homes. Their tireless efforts also provide food, shelter and care for approximately 250 feral cats on a daily basis.

Metropolitan Maltese Rescue is an all-volunteer organization founded in 1998 by a group of Maltese dog lovers in New York City. The volunteers foster and place Maltese and Maltese-mixes found as strays, surrendered by their owners, or rescued from shelters. They are dedicated to using every means at their disposal to keep Maltese out of shelters and in loving, responsible and permanent forever-after homes.

Every foster and potential permanent home is carefully screened and all the dogs are vetted, spayed or neutered. The volunteers are also available after adoption to aid in resolving any concerns or problems that may arise.  Because they rely solely on donations, funding and professional support is always needed in order to sustain their no-kill community wide vision.

Their Work

On December 4, 2011, 911 dispatchers called in to Christine Lea Bishop, founder of Critter Café Rescue, on an animal abuse case where a prominent figure within the community decided to severely beat and abuse a raccoon. The man, along with the help of other otherwise well respected men in the district, were out in the park area where a raccoon came up to stay in a manger and found a sandwich to eat from the night before. The man decided to take a board with a nail and hit the raccoon repeatedly until she was unable to get away and save herself. The man proceeded to tie a rope around her neck causing the blood vessels in her eyes to break. The man was intending in broad daylight to skin her alive.

Thankfully, a passerby stopped the man and phoned the police. Fast forward to 3 months later, rehabilitated by Christine and her volunteers, the green light was given from the vet for the raccoon to be released.  Sadly, no legal prosecution was taken against this man by the authorities and heinous crimes as such continue to be overlooked.

Critter Café Rescue endlessly fights for the rights of these helpless creatures and operates solely on donations and Christine’s life savings that are now depleted due to the overwhelming costs on vetting, medicating, spaying and neutering, and advocating for these helpless animals. They are the only all-species rescue in possibly all of Michigan and have been saving lives since 2002.

To date the shelter has saved over 3,000 ‘critters’ and now they desperately need our help to keep their doors open.

Soi Dog Foundation

Location
Amphur Talang, Phuket
Their Work

In light of the recent devastating floods in Thailand, large scale evacuations of people are currently occurring in the worst affected areas of the Bangkok area. Pet owners are forced to leave their animals behind in their houses, many on top of roofs and buildings to protect them from the flood but with no food or water. In addition, Bangkok is home to tens of thousands of street dogs and cats that rely on the local urban environment to survive. With flood waters reaching up to 2 meters depth north of Bangkok, these animals have nowhere to turn.

The situation is even worse for those dogs at puppy farms and animals of all sorts in shelters who have been abandoned only to drown in their own cages or left hungry with no means to find food on their own.

Soi Dog Foundation is a non-profit, charitable organization in Thailand with roots in the United States, Australia, France and Holland. Run mainly by volunteers, Soi Dog Foundation is dedicated to eliminating the suffering of stray dogs and cats in Thailand through surgical and humane sterilization, as an alternative to some of the painful and barbaric practices commonly used. They vet the sick and injured and find suitable placements in foster care and forever homes; as well as, educating the public about the ways in which the problems of suffering could be solved through their programs and awareness.

Soi Dog is presently working around the clock with groups of volunteers and small agencies in the Bangkok area to rescue these animals. Dedicated animal lovers have been going out on boats, and sightings of hundreds of dogs swimming for their lives, many of them drowning from exhaustion and hunger have been reported. Funding for these helpless animals is crucial at this time in order for their mission to continue, before it’s too late. Donations are urgently needed for cages, food, transportation, medicine, temporary shelter and of course veterinary help.

Additional Info and Website

An emergency appeal fund has been established. Donations may be made online at: http://www.soidog.org/en/flood-relief

Soi Dog is run by volunteers at their own expense. All donations go directly to helping the animals in distress. Soi Dog has humanely sterilized close to 35,000 stray dogs and feral cats since their beginning in 2003.
