Husky Romi is a non-profit organization providing a safe haven for abandoned and abused huskies and wolves in South Africa. They provide a home to huskies and wolves that can't be kept as pets, because of their complicated nature. Many of the animals arrive in poor condition, some not even knowing what grass is, and are rehabilitated with loving care by Larry Paul and his team of helpers and volunteers. This group was started to provide support to the Husky Romi project and to promote the protection of wolves and other wildlife. The sanctuary is open for the public to come and learn about wolves, entry is free, but they appreciate donations for the buying of food and for veterinary bills. All the huskies are spayed and neutered when they arrive at Husky Romi.  They currently provide a home for twenty Huskies and one hundred and four Timber wolves.

Husky Romi encourages people to come to the sanctuary in Reitz, South Africa for a visit.  The wolves range in age from puppies to eighteen years old.  Under the watchful eye of Larry, visitors can view the camps to meet and pet the ancestor to all breeds of dogs. The Huskies on the farm love visitors and start “calling” at the moment of arrival at wolf camp.  Husky Romi also offers camping facilities giving visitors the opportunity to lie back and listen to the howling that continues throughout the night.

The sanctuary has a sponsor program giving individuals the opportunity to “adopt” a wolf or husky rescue. The sanctuary will send photos and updates of the rescued animal in exchange for sponsor donations.

SPCA International is so happy to award Husky Romi with a Shelter of The Week Grant to help with the care and medical expenses of these wonderful creatures.  The dollars will go toward spaying of the females and shade shelters to help keep the animals out of the hot sun.

Their Work

House of Puddles ( HOP) is a retirement home for homeless basset hounds, operated by Marilyn Brazzle.  Since 2002, Marilyn has provided a home for over 70 senior or special needs hounds, accepted at the request or referral of basset hound rescue organizations.  The seniors at HOP average about 12 years in age.  Their health issues include blindness, deafness, diabetes, cancer, incontinence, arthritis and severe skin allergies.  HOP does not actively try to adopt dogs out because they are generally considered to be unadoptable due to their age or special needs, but if the right family comes along for the right dog, HOP is thrilled for one of their hounds to have their own forever home.

Each year the HOP participates in several fund raising activities.  Every October Marilyn invites friends, their families and hounds to her home for a day to enjoy friendship, food and love of hounds. For the past few years, HOP has been honored to have Jeanne Wells, a dear friend and internationally known photographer, attend the annual party to photograph the hounds and visitors. Ms. Wells has captured exquisite black and white photos of hounds just being hounds – begging for food, looking worried (that they aren’t getting enough food), pretending to sleep (in hopes someone will leave food unattended), and so forth.  These lovely black and white photos can be ordered on the HOP website with a portion of the proceeds donated directly to HOP.

HOP is a non-profit organization funded solely on donations and located in Frederick, Maryland. They accept basset hounds from across the US and provide a loving, permanent home for 18-20 bassets. HOP’s mission is to prevent these dogs, who have been given up by their owners, lost, or abandoned, from being euthanized or living out their days in a cage merely because no one is willing to provide them a home.

SPCA International is delighted that our Shelter of the Week grant will help HOP pay for the many veterinarian services required to keep these loving hounds as happy and healthy as possible.

Their Work

Founded in 2008, Tranquility Trail Animal Sanctuary is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization dedicated to the compassionate care of companion animals. The Tranquility Trail mission is to rescue, shelter, rehabilitate and hopefully find a forever home for every animal that finds its way to the shelter.

Tranquility Trail Animal Sanctuary is wholly committed to the preservation, protection and rehabilitation of companion animals considered untreatable and unadoptable. The sanctuary is designed specifically around the needs of the animals who will be fortunate enough to call Tranquility Trail home – whether that be for a month or the rest of the animal’s natural life.

They offer exceptional programs of rescue, spay/neuter, rehabilitation, adoption, sanctuary, holistic care, community outreach and education, pet parenting support and collaborative partnerships. With an eye to decreasing the euthanasia of adoptable and treatable animals in Arizona, Tranquility Trail works in partnership with the Animal Rescue Organizations in and around Arizona and the southwest.

They are a volunteer based organization and every donation they receive ensures their programs sufficiently serve those animals that are lost, abused, neglected or unwanted in the community. They welcome every animal with loving and open arms.

Tranquility Trail Animal Sanctuary is proud to be the Arizona Chapter for the House Rabbit Society with two House Rabbit Society Licensed Educators on staff.

They are currently in Phase One of a Three Phase development and are a sanctuary for domestic rabbits only, at this time.  Completion of Phases two and three in the future will allow for the care of other companion animals.

SPCA International is happy to award Tranquility Trail with a Shelter of the Week Grant to further their efforts with the EVOLVE Program. In order to live its philosophy, Tranquility Trail developed the EVOLVE program with the goals of providing sanctuary for companion animals and of developing a path to successful adoption, when appropriate.  This program outlines the key components of a holistic, compassionate philosophy:  E-veryday Care, V-eterinarian Care, O-peration, L-ove, V-olunteers, E-ducation.

Rescue and Support of Animal Victims

Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support (JEARS) is a collaboration of three established and registered no kill animal rescue NPOs in Japan.  The intention behind the creation of JEARS is to coordinate rescue and support efforts for animals in crisis due to the March 11th  Earthquake and Tsunami in Northern Japan.

The founding partners are:
David Wybenga and Susan Roberts of Japan Cat Network,
Susan Mercer of HEART-Tokushima
, and Isabella Gallaon-Aoki of Animal Friends Niigata.

These groups along with individual volunteers who have put aside their own challenges to help with this effort are working tirelessly to rescue and re-home animals in Japan affected by this tragedy. These are no kill groups that have been rescuing and re-homing animals in Japan for many years. Funds will be used directly for animal rescue and support.

SPCA International is hopeful that our Emergency Grant will help these groups and volunteers to continue these life saving efforts.

Their Work

Founded in the mid 1980’s, Lamar County Humane Shelter is an organization run strictly by volunteers with the assistance of veterinarians in neighboring counties and through monetary donations from its members. In fact in the recent years, the backbone of the group is a dedicated handful of senior volunteers who have residing in the county for some time. Unfortunately, the county faces a very large unemployment rate and the sources for funding their spay/neuter programs, veterinary bills and food bills as well as educational facilitation to the public, has practically dried up.

They work with profound determination to stay afloat by relying on membership ($15 annual fee) from the greater population, community, and government as an outcry to support their efforts.

State law mandates that if a county doesn’t have a large city in it, the commissioners are to provide assistance for an animal shelter. Because no monies have been allocated for a full facility thus far, the volunteers care for the injured and stray animals in their own homes. Sadly, due to the low-income situation in the county, and the lack of education, adoption rates are very low and cruelty, negligence and apathy are still very high.

Lamar County Humane Society needs all the help they can get by way of monetary relief for vet bills, sterilization, education and would also greatly appreciate pet food contribution for small and large animals.

Their Work

It was brought to Amy Restucci’s attention several months ago by Mirta Maltes, a passionate animal advocate who lives in the area, that there were desperate stray dogs in the Everglades, Florida City, and Homestead areas of Florida.

After checking the area, Amy realized the situation was critical. More than 100+ dogs were being dumped in those areas and left there to die from starvation, heat and other severe conditions present in the Everglades, including being hit by cars on the highway nearby.

Many people have asked what has contributed to this situation, and Amy, together with other volunteers, feel it is a combination of many factors.

Migrant workers turn their pets loose when they move on to jobs elsewhere, and people dump their unwanted pets or pets they just can’t afford any longer. While this is so wrong on so many levels, Amy and the other dedicated citizens cannot ignore what is happening, and feel obligated to take action.

Amy’s mission was created as a community effort to END the neglect and abuse of precious animal companions. By raising awareness of this problem, then remedying it, Amy believes and hopes that eventually people will think twice before dumping their family pets to die.

Amy and the other dedicated volunteers spend 24 hours a day working very hard to rescue and vet these dogs, but unfortunately the current monetary donations have not been enough.  In addition to funding, they desperately need homes, foster care and adopters, and medication. Together with the other concerned citizens, Amy has been able to rescue and treat over 50 dogs to date.

Their Work

Kyiv Society for the Protection of Animals was established in 1960 to encourage humane treatment of animals in the city of Kyiv (Kiev), Ukraine. Since its inception, it has been an advocate for animal rights and has been educating people in the region about why and how to treat animals with dignity and respect. In 2000, They established a shelter in Gostomel, near Kyiv that now houses up to 700 dogs and cats. The goal of this shelter is to help stray and abandoned animals find new and loving homes.  In 2006, the shelter established a veterinary hospital and rehabilitation center, which is now the largest in Ukraine. Most animals brought to the shelter are spay or neutered before being adopted into their forever home. The staff and volunteers work tirelessly around the clock to lobby the authorities in Kyiv to use more humane methods of controlling the population of stray animals.  Each victory, no matter how small creates an environment more accepting of these vulnerable animals, and proves that they can be rehabilitated and adopted into loving families. SPCA International applauds the work being done by the KSPA and its staff and volunteers.

Update Summer, 2011:

I’m following up on the grant donated by SPCA to Kyiv Society for the Protection of Animals in February 2011.
The money were spent in March – June 2011 on neutering and vaccination of 47 stray animals in city Kyiv, Ukraine. Many animals required also some cure.

I don’t have all papers at hand yet, just first two months March and April. 10 animals were processed in March and 15 in April. The amounts are ukrainian hryvnas, UAH. 5700 + 3200 = 8900 UAH which slightly exceeds 1000 USD at the rate of March-April 2011.

KSPA, its president Asia Serpinska, me personally, all the dogs, we all thank SPCA and their sponsors very cordially for the support!

With an estimated 16,000 homeless dogs and cats fighting for survival on the streets of Manzanillo, Mexico, a group of all volunteer run citizens and expats have come together to donate their time, effort, money and skills to the welfare of these animals.

PATA, an acronym for “People Helping all Animals” translated from Spanish, is a non-profit organization founded in 2005, whose mission is to provide free spay/neuter clinics; foster homeless and injured animals to place them in forever homes, and cultivate a a culture of respect and concern for all animals and wildlife through education.

One of PATA’s goals is to appeal to the public by indicating the impact of many  animals who are left dying, suffering, poisoned and hit by cars in the streets as being a major health concern to the public.  Abandon, sick and deceased animals pose a threat to infection, disease and polluted beaches within the community.

They work not only with the local citizens but with the municipality of the region as well as foreigners who arrive that would like to offer their help. These animals require human intervention, profoundly stated on their website, ” After all it’s not their fault, it’s ours”.
