Since 1989, KAPES Founder Kyenan Kum has visited Moran Market to document the many animal rights violations perpetrated by its dog meat industry.  During her many visits, she has witnessed traders transport and store dogs and cats in cramped cages without food, water, or necessary medical care.  She witnessed market workers rope dogs by the neck and fling them out of the back of their truck to be butchered.  She saw market workers slaughter, electrocute, and boil these animals.

Soon abuses like these will end.  As part of a new city plan to be completed by 2014, the temporary market is going to be shut down, and new market buildings and an apartment complex will be developed.  Though the new development includes an indoor shopping complex, city officials have deemed that dog meat trade will not be allowed in the new facilities.  This is good news for animal lovers and activists worldwide, because the closing of the temporary market marks the end of a dog meat industry giant, and the beginning of a new era.

While the Sungnam’s government has taken the official position that dog meat trade will not be allowed in the new buildings, KAPES’ worries aren’t over yet.  Dog meat traders in the permanent storefronts are organizing to reestablish their trade in the planned development, but KAPES is working closely with Sungnam city officials to stave off their demands.  Local government officials have begun talks with the Moran Market Association head and the dog meat shop owners in an attempt to persuade them against further dog meat trade. They also encouraged dog meat shop owners to begin planning for a future without the dog meat industry.

In addition to working with government officials on the new market plan, KAPES has made a concerted effort to educate Sungnam residents about animal rights and protection.  KAPES is distributing pamphlets to local apartment complexes and district offices about the revised animal protection law and the Ministry of Agriculture’s Animal Welfare Call Center.

KAPES sees the closure of Moran Market as symbol of the changing mentality about the dog meat trade.  They are hopeful this is the beginning of the end for the dog meat industry!

Their Work

Lusaka Animal Welfare Society (LAWS), the only animal organization within the country of Zambia, has changed the way animals are viewed and treated with in the small country located in central Africa. Their free mobile clinics have vaccinated, spay or neutered, and treated over 5,000 animals that would not have had any medical treatment at all. Their hard work to educate the public has reached out to the surrounding compounds and more people are seeking treatment for their sick or injured animals.

Recently, LAWS held their annual Rabies Educational Day where they invited 350 local school children, the community, and community leaders to learn more about the disease and how it can be prevented through vaccinating their animals, as well as, the proper care and treatment of animals.

It is this aggressive approach that has lead the Zambian Government to put into place the Animal Act Law that is helping to eradicating rabies from the country and improving the care and treatment of the animals that call that country home.

SPCA International is proud to award Lusaka Animal Welfare Society with a Shelter of the Week grant for all their hard work and dedication to the animals in Zambia.

International Bird Rescue Research Center (IBRRC) is a leading organization in the rescue and rehabilitation of oiled and injured seabirds. IBRRC has responded to over 150 oil spills around the world in its 40-year history and treated over 140 species of aquatic birds.  IBRRC is a key partner in the State of California’s Oiled Wildlife Care Network and operates year-round seabird rehabilitation programs from the State’s San Francisco Bay and Los Angeles Oiled Bird Care Centers, caring for thousands of sick and injured aquatic birds.

In October 2009, IBRRC responded to a call for help from overwhelmed wildlife centers in the Northwest following a large-scale algal bloom off the coast of Oregon and Washington State. Heavy surf churned the algae into a slimy foam that impacted the waterproofing of thousands of seabirds, many of which washed up on local beaches. With help from the US Coast Guard, nearly 500 of the stricken seabirds were transported to the San Francisco Bay Oiled Bird Care Center where IBRRC’s trained staff and volunteers had the best chance of rehabilitating such a large number of wildlife casualties.

In the midst of this rescue effort, IBRRC was also activated to respond to an oil spill in the San Francisco Bay as part of the Oiled Wildlife Care Network. While fortunately the wildlife casualties from this incident were fewer than those hit by the algae bloom, it still meant a stretch for the skilled response team at an already challenging time.

SPCA International is proud to assist the IBRRC’s rescue efforts via an Emergency Grant.

Laurie Deese founded Best Friends Dog Rescue in 2001 with the mission to rescue dogs and puppies that have been abandoned, mistreated or unwanted in Cairo, Georgia.

Every dog that comes into their care is vet checked, spayed or neutered and then placed into secure loving homes where they can live out the life that they deserve, a life that failed them once before.

Best Friends Dog Rescue also works on educating the importance of spay and neuter and responsible pet ownership within their community due to the high number of unnecessary euthanizations at local shelters. Realizing the need for low cost spay and neuter options to offset financial strain for many dog owners, Best Friends Dog Rescue travels twice a month to surrounding communities to offer sterilization clinics at a reduced rate.

Their Work

In 2010, Pakistan suffered a devastating flood. Over thirty million people along the river Indus were affected and thousands of animals drowned, were injured and left starving to death. The Ravi Foundation responded by sending out its emergency response program and over thirty five thousand animals were fed in three phases.

Then again in 2011, heavy rains flooded vast areas of Sindh province in Pakistan. Over half a million animals including livestock and working animals perished. Ravi Foundation provided feed and medical care to thousands of animals in need. This is when SPCA International frst stepped in and provided funding to help the affected animals living close to the eroded river.

Another flood hit hard in 2013, and once again the Ravi Foundation responded with feeding stations, vaccinations and care for animals that contracted Foot and Mouth disease, skin and stomach problems and other diseases.

In July of 2014, they responded to the drought affected in certain areas in Pakistan, providing food, water and medical care for 2200 animals and vaccinated 11748 sick animals in five different villages.

In Pakistan there is no concept of animal disaster management besides vaccines during outbreaks. Most importantly, there was no support from the government to address the needs of animals during manmade and natural disasters until the Ravi Foundation launched aggressive campaigns urging governments to allocate funds for animal feed and medical care.  For the first in time in history, the Punjab government allocated a small budget to support their efforts this past year.

Aside from disaster response, the Ravi Foundation closely monitors and raises awareness for animal rights. They have developed animal welfare programs and continuously conduct meetings with concerned government officials, media and other stakeholders to take steps to make Pakistan an animal friendly society.

SPCAI was just notified once again to animals affected by severe flooding and their team is on standby ready to help once again.  With an Emergency Shelter Support Grant, they will now be able to arrange a medical care program for flood-affected animals in two of the worst areas affected by the rising water.

Founded in March 2009 the Kurdistan Organization for Animal Right Protection (KOARP) is located in Duhok, Iraq. KOARP is the first organization in Iraqi history to be given permission to build a stray animal shelter.

Through their extensive programs, KOARP protects wildlife and their habitats, helps control the stray animal population, and drafts animal rights protection laws. They also rescue animals and provide ongoing supplies for necessary medical treatment, and supervise multiple animal facilities to advocate for fair treatment (e.g. markets, slaughter houses, pet shops, zoos, colleges..). While KOARP has a non-existent operating budget, they are able to realize their objectives through the help of their amazing volunteers.

The Animal House Jamaica aids Jamaica’s neglected, abused, stray, abandoned, unwanted, and injured animals. Founded in the 1990’s as the first companion animal welfare organization on the north coast of Jamaica, it is the first no-kill shelter on the island and the only to provide TNR (Trap, Neuter and Release) with feral cats. The non-profit organization works mainly with dogs and cats and occasionally horses and other species in emergency situations. Once an animal is rescued and in their hands, they provide sanctuary, medical treatment and rehabilitation, including spay/neuter.

The dedicated team then works relentlessly to find each animal a permanent, safe and loving home. Several hundred of the rescues have even found homes abroad with visitors to Jamaica, who fell in love with the stray, injured or abandoned animals. The few that are unable to be adopted out are provided care and sanctuary for the duration of their natural lives. The Animal House Jamaica also does a significant amount of spay and neuter for low-income families’ pets, as well as hands-on community education about animal welfare, including the importance of proper care and containment, and the critical need for spay/neuter to curb overpopulation and prevent unwanted litters.

Being a former Shelter Grant recipient, SPCA International has been following their great work since early 2010. Recently, they wrote to us with urgent requests in order to keep providing the outstanding care they offer to the abundance of animals in need living on the island. Not having enough room for all the strays, and enough funding to supply sterilization, medical needs and even food, they came to us for help once again. Immediately, we took action and offered them an Emergency Shelter Grant thanks to the generosity of our supporters. Their needs are on going, please help by sharing their story so we can continue helping the animals of Jamaica, and all over the world.

Their Work

The Pawnee County Humane Society (PCHS) was established in April of 2005 after several meetings of concerned citizens with the goal of decreasing the number of animals being euthanized at the city pound.  As awareness grew PCHS began helping with animals from Pawnee County. The success of PCHS is due to many volunteer hours by many volunteers who truly want to make the life of the homeless pets in Pawnee County a little better.  These works are supported local Veterinary Clinics where the homeless pets are spayed, neutered, and given care so that they can live healthier lives.

PCHS has created Project P.A.W.S. (Providing Animals With a Shelter) and they are hard at work on this initiative. This shelter will provide a caring environment to homeless animals in Pawnee and surrounding areas and the ability to reach out to help find them a forever home.  The community will benefit from this central location to bring and adopt animals and a place to present educational programs on responsible pet ownership.   Project P.A.W.S. was created with the continuing mission of preventing suffering, neglect, abuse and cruelty to animals through community awareness and education and ending the euthanasia of healthy adoptable animals in Pawnee County.

PCHS also runs a Feral Cat Trap, Neuter and Release Program in the county helping to control the population of feral cats in a humane yet effective way.

SPCA International is thrilled to award PCHS with a shelter of the week grant to help these deserving volunteers with their live saving work.  The funds from this grant will help the P.A.W.S. initiative with a much needed refrigerator to house medications and vaccinations in the new shelter.

Egyptian Mau Rescue

Their Work

Egyptian Mau Cats are the oldest known descendents of the domestic cat, existing since Pharaonic times, and they are the only naturally occurring small spotted cat in the world.

However, Maus are facing possible extinction. In their homeland, they are currently unrecognized, routinely poisoned, and often suffer from endemic feline diseases. Outside of Egypt, many Maus are also endangered due to interbreeding and lack of new bloodlines.

Formed in 2004, Egyptian Mau Rescue Organization (EMRO) is officially registered as a non-profit charity in Egypt, an NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) with charitable number #6196 effective August 23, 2005. EMRO is dedicated to rescuing these descendents of the sacred cat of Ancient Egypt.

EMRO is an adoption agency both locally and internationally for tame Maus. Adoptions are on a cost-recovery basis and by approved application. EMRO is not supported in any way by the government but exists solely through donations, vet clinic funds, private cat boarding, and through sponsorship of its cats.   The Mau is a very intelligent, noble and ancient cat, and it is EMRO's hope to help raise awareness and preserve the species for future generations. EMRO aims to increase education in Egypt and around the world about these magnificent and intelligent cats.

EMRO's goals are to help save the endangered native Egyptian Mau and rehome as many of the cats as can feasibly be done, both locally and internationally. We also provide outreach for these animals through means of education and brochures in an attempt to raise awareness for these underappreciated, abused and neglected ancient animals.

SPCA International is happy to award EMRO with a Shelter of the Week Grant to enable them to purchase life saving trauma equipment for the Cairo Shelter.
